COVID-19 in the Mekong

The novel coronavirus has triggered a global response of extreme measures. The immediate changes are countable. As of April 15, 2020, over 2 million cases of the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) have been counted globally, with over 100,000 confirmed deaths . Tech tools to track the movement of infected people are being deployed around the world, from Israel to Singapore , with some of the largest historically rival companies globally – Apple and Google – teaming up to develop a tracking system. At least 118 of the UN-recognized 195 countries have put into place travel bans or border restrictions. Social distancing measures limiting public gatherings are in place in at least 151 countries, with at least 74 countries accomplishing this by law, order, or regulation. Human movement has slowed to such a level that even the Earth’s crust is vibrating less .  Social distancing at Chulalangkorn Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand. Photo by Chainwit. via Wikipedia.com . First death due to COVID-19 reported in Cambodia

The time to act is now,” said WHO Representative to Cambodia. “If we work together in solidarity, we can stop this outbreak.”   The World Health Organization (WHO) in Cambodia extends its deepest sympathies to the family of the Cambodian man who died today due to COVID-19. Each and every one of these deaths is a tragedy. We must do all we can to prevent further loss of life. Until today, Cambodia was part of an increasingly small group of countries which had yet to experience deaths due to COV...

What we do right now will determine the course of this outbreak,” said His Excellency Professor Mam Bunheng, Minister of Health . “We must all accelerate our efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19 in the coming days and weeks. Lives depend on it.” On 20 February, 32 locally acquired COVID-19 cases were reported in Phnom Penh after a breach in quarantine. As of 19 March, a total of 1578 cases, including one death, have been reported in Cambodia since the beginning of the pandemic. The recent COVID-19 outbreaks are most likely caused by the new B.1.1.7 variant, which transmits more quickly than previously circulating virus. Seeking appropriate care in a timely manner can reduce the risk of dying due to COVID-19. Cambodia reported its first de...
