The time to act is now,” said WHO Representative to Cambodia. “If we work together in solidarity, we can stop this outbreak.”
The World Health Organization (WHO) in Cambodia extends its deepest sympathies to the family of the Cambodian man who died today due to COVID-19.
Today marks a sad milestone in Cambodia’s struggle with the virus, and it also marks one year since WHO declared COVID-19 a pandemic. Times like this force us to reflect on what we have learned and to take action to stop the outbreak.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, more than 117 million cases of COVID-19 and 2.6 million deaths have been reported to WHO globally, including more than 1.6 million cases and more than 29 000 deaths in the Western Pacific Region. Each and every one of these deaths is a tragedy. We must do all we can to prevent further loss of life.
Until today, Cambodia was part of an increasingly small group of countries which had yet to experience deaths due to COVID-19. Today’s sad death has highlighted that Cambodia is at a tipping point in its struggle against COVID-19. Everybody in Cambodia must take heed of this tragedy. COVID-19 can infect anyone, regardless of where you are from. Just as we all share the risk, we all share the responsibility in taking steps to prevent this outbreak from becoming more widespread. It is critical that everyone follow guidance from the Royal Government of Cambodia, including the Ministry of Health, on isolation and quarantine, and other public health measures. This is crucial to protect yourself, your community and Cambodia.
Each and every person in Cambodia should follow the 3 do’s and 3 don’ts. Wearing a mask, washing your hands with soap or alcohol gel, and keeping at least 1.5 metres physical distance, is key to stopping this outbreak. Avoid crowded places and places with poor ventilation, and do not touch each other. This will help to stop the virus spreading.“The time to act is now,” said Dr Li Ailan, WHO Representative to Cambodia. “If we work together in solidarity, we can stop this outbreak. If we do not, we can expect to continue to see the devastating impacts of this virus, that so many other countries around the world have suffered.”
Our collective actions in the coming days and weeks will determine our success or failure in fighting against COVID-19. We must all do our part to save lives and keep Cambodia safe.
